£17.8 million to provide a resilient and reliable highway network in Cumbria (Levelling Up Fund 2)

Almost £18 million from the Levelling Up Fund has been allocated to upgrade 30km of the Cumbrian highway network.

Upgrading the Cumbrian highway network

»Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp Cumbrian highway network serves communities along the Irish Sea coast and nationally significant employment sites. Levelling Up funding will see a comprehensive programme of improvement works on:

  • the A5086 between Cockermouth and Egremont
  • the A595 south of Sellafield
  • the A590 through Barrow-in-Furness

»Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp improvements include:

  • resurfacing and drainage works
  • repairs to 21 bridge structures

Supporting communities and business

»Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp investment will:

  • improve access to employment opportunities and services
  • reduce travel costs
  • reduce  road closures due to highway defects
