Blackburn transport package awarded £20 million (Levelling Up Fund 2)

Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council has been allocated £20 million to improve transport infrastructure within South East Blackburn.

An upgraded walking and cycling network for Blackburn

A new walking and cycling network will give residents better access to local amenities and opportunities. It will increase physical activity and reduce trips on the local road network.

»Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp new network includes:

  • new cycling routes throughout Southeast Blackburn
  • new crossings and improved provision for pedestrians

Capacity Improvements to M65 Junction 5

Levelling Up funding will help tackle congestion and improve safety on the M65 Junction 5.

This is by:

  • widening the B6232 and A6077 to allow for additional traffic entering the M65
  • widening both on slips for two-lane entry
  • widening the Eastbound off slip to allow more traffic to enter Blackburn
  • amending roundabout carriageway road markings and creating an additional lane
  • full traffic signalisation of the roundabout on all approaches

Councillor Phil Riley, Leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, said:

We’re delivering on our £1 billion economic vision. This scheme is one of our many transformational Growth Axis projects that will deliver levelling-up opportunities of scale - supporting 100,000 jobs in the area and improved and sustainable transport infrastructure.
