34th Universal Periodic Review: UK statement on Angola
皇冠体育app UK delivers statement on Angola at the 34th Session of Universal Periodic Review (UPR), sharing recommendations to improve their human rights record.
皇冠体育app Universal Periodic Review takes place in Geneva.
皇冠体育app United Kingdom recognises Angola鈥檚 human rights progress, including ratification of human rights treaties and criminalisation of acts of discrimination based on sexual orientation. 皇冠体育app UK acknowledges advances in media freedom and liberalising public debate. However, we remain concerned that police violence, arbitrary detentions and extra-judicial killings remain embedded in the practices of Angolan security forces.
皇冠体育app UK welcomes Angola鈥檚 National Policy on Gender Equality and support for the 12 years of quality education campaign, but remains concerned that societal gender biases still exist. 皇冠体育app UK encourages Angola to ensure girls鈥 education becomes a priority on the ground.
We recommend that Angola:
-
Ratify and implement the Protocol of 2014 to the ILO Forced Labour Convention 1930, (P029);
-
Adopt an open, merit-based process when selecting national candidates for UN Treaty Body elections;
-
Strengthen the mandate of the Human Rights Ombudsman, ensuring compliance with the Paris Principles.
