Foreign Office Minister welcomes adoption of UN resolution on human rights situation in Iran

Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt welcomed the adoption which demonstrates the depth of international concern at the worsening human rights situation in Iran.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Speaking today he said:

鈥淚 welcome the adoption of this resolution on the human rights situation in Iran by the Plenary of the UN General Assembly. 皇冠体育app resolution passed by an increased majority of votes, demonstrating the depth of international concern at the worsening human rights situation in Iran. 皇冠体育app human rights record in Iran remains appalling and whilst the world focuses on new human rights challenges we must not forget the continued suffering of people in Iran.

鈥淥ver the last twelve months, the Iranian regime has stepped up its campaign of intimidation and human rights abuses. 皇冠体育app rate of executions is alarming, with many carried out in public and following trials that fall far short of international standards. Crackdowns on any form of dissent continue, with some reports suggesting Iran has the highest number of journalists in prison of any country in the world. Alarmingly, two opposition leaders have been under house arrest since February 2011, with no credible justification.

鈥溁使谔逵齛pp UK will continue to lead international action to address the deteriorating human rights situations in Iran and we call once again on the Iranian regime to respect the universal freedoms of their citizens鈥.
