UK statement on the 31 October 2020 presidential elections in Côte d’Ivoire

Minister for Africa James Duddridge gave a statement on Côte d’Ivoire’s presidential election on 31 October 2020.

This was published under the 2019 to 2022 Johnson Conservative government

Minister for Africa, James Duddridge said:

»Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp UK condemns the violence and incendiary rhetoric during the electoral period in Côte d’Ivoire and expresses its condolences to the families of those who have died. I wish a full recovery to the injured and underline the importance of a full investigation into all incidents.

»Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp UK takes note of the provisional election results published by the Independent Electoral Commission on Monday 2 November, noting also that voter participation varied considerably across the country, whether through choice or through disenfranchisement. »Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp lack of consensus on the electoral process has divided communities, but creating parallel structures is not a resolution.

I urge all parties to exercise restraint and abstain from declarations which may inflame the situation further. I encourage all parties to respect the constitutional order and democratic process and to re-establish a genuine political dialogue to resolve their differences.

»Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp UK stands with the people of Côte d’Ivoire at this important moment and reiterates its commitment to working with all stakeholders in a peaceful way.
