Paddle and rymer weir improvements

Published 28 March 2014

皇冠体育app Environment Agency own 5 paddle and rymer weirs on the River Thames. 皇冠体育appse are located at:

  • Rushey
  • Northmoor
  • Iffley
  • Goring
  • Streatley

Paddles and rymers are heavy and awkward to move, and could cause injury to Environment Agency staff. 皇冠体育app Environment Agency is therefore looking at how these weirs operate to see if they need to make any changes to reduce the risk of injury.

Rushey

皇冠体育app Environment Agency has started work at Rushey to replace the weir, as structural surveys showed it was in very poor condition and needed urgent attention.

皇冠体育appy are keeping a small, safe-to-operate paddle and rymer element as a heritage feature. This was agreed with English Heritage.

Goring

Goring Weir includes a small paddle and rymer section, which the Environment Agency replaced with a lightweight version on a trial basis. 皇冠体育appy intend to make this a permanent change.

This will require listed building consent, as the weir is Grade-2 listed.

Northmoor, Iffley and Streatley

皇冠体育app Environment Agency will not know if any work is needed on the paddle and rymer weirs at Northmoor, Iffley and Streatley until a health and safety review has been completed.
