In 2015, the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS, now Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS)), acting through the UK Space Agency (UKSA), awarded Reaction Engines (RE) a UK Space Agency grant not exceeding 拢50,000,000 (fifty million pounds) for the development of a novel engine concept that combines air breathing and rocket technologies into a single engine system enabled by ground-breaking heat exchanger technology. This engine system is known as the Synergetic Air-Breathing Rocket Engine (SABRE) Programme.
