General

»Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp European Convention on Human Rights provides legal protection for the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals. It was incorporated into United Kingdom law by the Human Rights Act 1998.

»Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp Convention is divided into “articlesâ€� and over the years has been supplemented by protocols agreed by the Council of Europe. Some of the protocols deal with procedural issues, but some guarantee further rights in addition to those in the Convention. »Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp United Kingdom has signed up to some but not all the protocols.

»Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp European Court of Human Rights is the international court set up to interpret and apply the Convention. It is based in Strasbourg, France.

Under the Human Rights Act, it is unlawful for a body carrying out a public function to act in a way that is incompatible with any of the Convention rights included in the Act. HM Revenue & Customs (NMWM02030) carries out a public function and so must comply with the provisions of the Human Rights Act.
