Synopsis
While fishing for shrimps off the River Humber entrance, Our Roseanne suffered an engine room fire which started at the diesel fired, shrimp boiler, located on the main deck. 皇冠体育app skipper attempted to put out the fire, but was beaten back due to the dense smoke. 皇冠体育app vessel was subsequently towed back alongside where she was met by the local Fire and Rescue Service, who extinguished the still smoldering carbonaceous fire.
皇冠体育app investigation determined that the boiler flame was drawn into the engine room, through the boiler air supply trunking after the boiler air blower was switched off. 皇冠体育app air flow reversal was due to the partial vacuum created by the main engine in the engine room because the ventilation system was completely blocked by rust flakes. This resulted in a plastic section of the blower air trunking on the main deck and seating material and a plastic oil drum in the engine room catching fire.
Action taken
皇冠体育app Deputy Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents has written to the owner with respect to:
-
皇冠体育app need to fit explicit, boiler operating instructions onbaord the vessel.
-
皇冠体育app removal from the vessel of unnecessary equipment.
-
皇冠体育app need for the crew to complete the four mandatory safety training courses for fishermen.
