Abstract

This paper discusses the statistics, determinants and responses to poverty 鈥� especially chronic poverty 鈥� in the Philippines. 皇冠体育app diverse issues covered include economic conditions (periodic recessions) and the need for a national development strategy, income and asset distribution, weaknesses in the government鈥檚 anti-poverty programs as well as social and subsidy programs, the lack of a cohesive social contract conducive to poverty eradication, and social conflicts and war in some regions with extreme chronic poverty.
